First, links!

San Francisco now has a "gender-friendly" steakhouse By this, yes, they do mean they have littler steaks and salads for those dainty women who of course do not like red meat. Also, men do not have gender. Who knew?

Diary entry from 1835 about that time we drank too much rum No, the other time we drank to much rum.

Tobias Buckell is awesome again, this time snarking at a Dodge commercial I'm always wary of getting to like an author too much in case they get Rice-Hamilton Syndrome or apparently get replaced by their evil twins, but I'm having a hard time resisting this one.

Dear fanfic authors,

I know they are etymologically related and it's confusing, but you mean "ravished," not "ravaged."

Love,
Sunny (who is considering ravaging - not ravishing - the cookie supply)

In other etymology news, I just realized something about the new BSG spinoff show Caprica: minor spoilers for eps. 1-3 )

First and most importantly, it is International Blog Against Racism Week. I figure my flist is more likely to have heard of the Liar coverfail and the Realms of Fantasy coverfail and the continuing Avatar-fail and other media-related issues, so as a teaser I'll link to this post with excerpts and links on Coca-Cola's exploitation of the peoples of India, Columbia, and other countries with high-poc populations. (I can't boycott beverages I already don't drink, but I think they own some snack food stuff too? I'll have to look into that.)

And now for the random closing of tabs:

  • So, this description of an upcoming Star Wars story for kids thing has me confused. They accidentally end up with River Tam a princess in a box. Okay, it happens. (Right?) But I'm struggling to imagine how "the kidnapped femme fatale Princess Mi" meshes with "story for younglings," let alone "not skeevy." Femme fatale? What does she do, seduce Han and then boil Chewie in a Wookiee-sized pot?

  • In case anyone wants to know exactly how financially screwed California is, here's a few factoids. I love this state, I really do, but it is a complicated and sometimes extremely strained love.

  • Mommy President, Papadama, and Drunk Uncle Tigh Disapprove of This Shit! Vid to MCR's "Teenagers" wherein the Fleet Parents are not impressed by those kids and their disorderly mutinous shenanigans. (I want the vid with this song and nu!Trek now like burning.)

  • XKCD reads my mind. I have been there so much. "You're actually going to loan me money, O Mighty Financial Institution? Me? WTF are you smoking? And who are you other people entrusting me with the care and education of children when I only graduated from this place seven years ago myself? I spend my free time thinking about goblin concepts of ownership and imaginary genocidal robot girlfriends and election laws in a nonexistent galaxy far far away and the fictional science behind fictional Spock's fictional and never-seen penis*, for Cthulhu's sake." And yet here I am with a home and a (repaired! and amazingly not-quite-totaled!) car and a job and all this grownup stuff when I feel like I'm secretly still twelve and they just haven't caught on yet.

*It's for science. Honest. I dissected the female cat reproductive system in school once, so you can trust me.

Roslin as Female President I want to see the version where Roslin is the commander and Adama is the schoolteacher now.

BSG: Razor (wherein I am sad and angry) Admiral Cain and the evil dead lesbian trope. Also the major heterosexual bias when Adama says that he didn't turn evil like Cain in part because he has a son who keeps him moral - in other words, if you don't reproduce, you might be less moral!

want to know how I feel about battlestar galactica? Cain's and Gaeta's roles as teh ebil gayz, and Gaeta's amputation as metaphor for his gayness and loss of moral center. I had caught the disabled=lesser connotations, but hadn't connected that to his sexual orientation. Also Gaeta and Cain as family-destroyers, in case you thought RDM hadn't put in enough stereotypes.

I need a Gaeta icon. ETA: Mission accomplished! Ridiculously hard to find, though - where is the Gaeta love?

It's easy to focus on BSG's daddy issues, what with Papadama and his all-consuming Adama Family Drama. (See also: Dee's last fight with her father, Kara and her deadbeat dad, Cavil as Evil Cylon Father, Tigh and Liam, Baltar and humanity...) But let's look at the mothers for a minute.

Ahahaha! As it turns out, we do have an answer as to whether all this will happen again: remember the Terminators?

We will also find out what the Cylon plan was in the fall, when The Plan, a two-hour special, airs. You know, if you tell us the Cylons have a plan in every intro for 3+ seasons, but don't reveal what that plan is in the actual show, there is a problem. Major things like that are best not left to spinoffs.

Random... when Kara told Baltar, "I'm not an angel," did anyone else Dido's "No Angel" (available for listening here)?

Also, if Lee had a theme song for his relationship with his father, I bet it would be Linkin Park's "Numb" (lyrics).

So... after last week's episode, I am left wondering: WHO THE FRAK IS RUNNING THE FRAKKING FLEET NOW?!?

Fun links:

[livejournal.com profile] beccatoria has macros! BSG: Motivational Posters. "Because sometimes being married to a comatose super scientist robot sports star isn't weird enough," ha!

She's also involved in the production of a helpful PSA from the fifties about The Enemy Within (lesbian robots oh noes! and they're recruiting!).

But the award for Most Mind-Blowing Vid I've Seen This Year So Far goes to [livejournal.com profile] obsessive24's Slow Down Gandhi. It critiques the Roslin/Adama administration and the mutineers. It's hard to pick a favorite moment, but the line "friendly fire - that's a funny word" accompanying a shot of Gaeta sitting in sick bay with his bandaged stump is up there. (The lyrics are as chewy and dense as some of the best poetry I've read, too. I think it's about critiquing people who give lip service to equity and standing up for "the little guy" while being just as corrupt and oppressive as the people they're supposedly against - see the line about "I had to agree to stop my marches/when they crucified Chris Columbus on the golden arches.")

In non-BSG news, Tobias Buckell has had to put the next Xenowealth book on hold because the first three only sold moderately well (he explains here). Damn it! I encourage everyone interested who can to go out and buy Crystal Rain, Ragamuffin, and Sly Mongoose. In a physical bookstore, because apparently that makes a difference in how they count sales for some arcane reason.

I will definitely be blogging about Ragamuffin and Sly Mongoose soon to persuade you all how awesome they are (haven't gotten to CR yet). For now, let me just say this: all sorts of chewy issues from xenophobia to the nature of democracy to violence to bulimia. Plus, there are Jamaicans and Aztecs IN SPAAAAACE! This includes kick-ass Jamaican cyborgs and Aztecs as both religious fanatic villains and (later) sympathetic teenage laborers. And zombies. Did I mention the zombies? You know you want that.

He's working on a different book, which also sounds awesome. I need a raise so I can support authors I like, seriously. Too bad that will not be happening...

ETA: David Anthony Durham is in the running for a Hugo! Despite the first sentence of Acacia: The War With the Mein throwing me (see here for context), I ended up loving the book, and will blog about that soon too. I can't wait for the next one.
sunnyskywalker: Young Beru Lars from Attack of the Clones; text "Sunnyskywalker" (Bill and Laura)
I think I have figured out why Cavil became the Evil Cylon Leader instead of just another Cylon model. It's because each side must have an egomaniacal old man in charge. In which I am sick of Adama's drunk narcissist act. )

The greater presence of the Eights lately reminds me of something Adama said back in the miniseries, something which Athena reminded him of when she was still incarcerated: he asked if humans deserved to survive, and she said maybe they don't. The way the show is going, I'm starting to agree with her. (Besides, it would tie it all together so nicely.) Not that the Cylon do either. Maybe the show will end with the end of all known sentient life! I'm not sure any other show has gone that far yet - it would make television history. And in this case, some fans might be rooting for that ending...

Or maybe I'm just cranky. If you want to be cranky with me, someone has made great Adama macros. Weed: because really, it's not like your decisions could get any WORSE.
sunnyskywalker: Young Beru Lars from Attack of the Clones; text "Sunnyskywalker" (CylonGirls)
Soooo... there's only three episodes left, and I do not see how they can possibly wrap this up satisfactorily. Especially if we spend 30% of the time watching Adama wander around drunk staring at the cracks in the ceiling. Or watching Kara listen to some guy play the piano.

Speaking of which, where did they get a piano? Was it just taking up valuable space which could house an entire family until someone said, "Hey, let's donate it to the bar!" or what? Why did they not throw it out the airlock ages ago?

And of course we still don't know where they're getting all the booze. They've finally mentioned that they synthesize coffee out of algae (and are they growing algae now or did they scoop up a year's supply of the stuff?), but we don't know about the alcohol. Just that they never run out. Ever. Or even run low.

During the last episode, my dad asked, "So, when they're at the bar, what do they use to pay?" I told him we have no frakking idea. Zarek mentioned that the economy makes no sense all the way back in Colonial Day, yet they go right on using paper money at least to Black Market and probably still.

Honestly, that bar is more trouble than it's worth.

I also still want to know where Lee is getting all these nicely-tailored suits. Add Roslin's athletic wear to the list, too.

Also, the plot and characters are not making sense. )

Got this from [livejournal.com profile] fialleril a while back and decided to try it. For this round, I've picked all female characters, because I felt like it.

List twelve characters without looking at the questions. Then answer the questions by replacing the corresponding number with the character.

1. Susan Ivanova
2. Talia Winters
3. Leia Organa
4. Sharon Agathon
5. Kara Thrace
6. Louanne Katraine
7. Hermione Granger
8. Luna Lovegood
9. Willow Rosenberg
10. Zoe Alleyne Washburne
11. Padmé Amidala
12. River Tam

I've been re-watching Season 3 of BSG, and one of the cut scenes for "Rapture" struck me as particularly interesting. It's an extended version of the scene where Dee is trying to rescue the morph-addled Starbuck, and Starbuck says, "I love Sam, I hate Sam. I love Lee, I hate Lee. I have to cheat just to keep the pieces all nice and neat." In the aired version, Dee slaps Starbuck and says to stay with her because she needs to help her rewire the avionics system.

In the longer, cut version, she continues with a speech which I'll transcribe as well as my memory allows: "Starbuck, this isn't because you're frakked up because of what Leoben did to you on New Caprica, or because you had a tough childhood. You know how I know? Because the Admiral loves you. That means you're not just a frak-up who can't keep her pants on. If you're frakking around with my husband, it's because you chose to."

Please note that Dee's most awesome, insightful, assertive speech in the entire season got cut. Talk about getting the short end of the Quadrangle stick.

But I also find it interesting that Dee knows Starbuck is responsible for her actions not because of her beliefs, or because of her observation of Starbuck's behavior, but because Admiral Adama loves Starbuck. We know Dee doesn't think the Admiral is always right - she's the one who straightened him out over splitting the fleet - so what's this about?

We know that Dee loves Admiral Adama. She tells Lee that one of the reasons she married him is that he's so much like his father. We also know that the last time she spoke to her father, they argued about her joining the military. So we can guess that maybe Dee, like just about everyone else on Galactica, is looking for a daddy who loves her. And since Adama thinks of the crew as his family... well, there's a reason fandom has nicknamed him Papadama. He fits the bill. And he does approve of Dee - he chose her out of everyone to be with him when he was struggling with the fleet break-up in Season 2, so he must have a high opinion of her.

But. He hasn't ever said she's like a daughter to him, has he? That's Starbuck (and Kat). Dee knows that Adama and Lee would risk the entire fleet to rescue Starbuck - they've done it - and that if he were here, Adama would have backed Lee up in ordering her to go risk her life for Starbuck. Here Dee is, Adama's real daughter-in-law, who is not a frak-up and who has always been there for the Adama boys, even when Adama was angry enough to split the fleet (or had a skeevy pornstache) and Lee was mopey and fat - and what thanks does she get? They still love Starbuck more and consider Dee expendable. Dee's still not part of the family. And Dee knows it.

It's been a crazy week including one 12-hour workday and a mild throat infection (third time I've been sick in five weeks - enough, already!). But things should be looking up soon. For starters, I'm getting a better (day!) job in January!

But on to the important things. I guess you could call these WIP theories, because I'm still working them out.

I had a lovely Thanksgiving--partly because Thanksgiving dinner was actually the first real food I'd eaten since Sunday. I had that awful norovirus last weekend, and spent most of the week in bed eating 7-Up and Jello. Sadly, this meant I couldn't bake the gingerbread pudding cake for Thanksgiving like I'd planned, but at least I was well enough to go!

Anyway, tonight I'm happy because I get to break out my BSG tag for new canon!

I do have one important question, though: when exactly during those ten months did Admiral Cain cut and highlight her hair? Was it an attempt at a pick-me-up in the midst of constant death and destruction or what?

Okay, two important questions: once again, where does their endless supply of alcohol come from?

Miscellany first:

The blog Hello, Hedonism* has quite the famous fictional character commenting on one of their entries! In the entry "Kids can be hot, too," which reports on how a 12-year-old girl is the "official ambassador" of a fashion week in Australia and observes that that says some really messed-up things about the current beauty ideal, check out Comment #3: "Humbert says, '12 is perfect.' " I think that sums it up nicely.

ETA: Oh yeah! [livejournal.com profile] plasticinecupid posted the most adorable picture of the actors who play Vorenus and Antony in their roles as lovers in another movie. They're so cuddly!

Moving on to the main point, I watched the pilot of Bionic Woman tonight. I almost turned it off after the first few minutes of totally sappy, totally fake-and-scripted conversation between Jamie and Boyfriend (Will? Was that his name?) Fortunately, just then Katee Sackhoff ran into them with a truck. Now we know what Starbuck got up to while on Earth! But Kara, seriously, what's with the hair? It looks like wet!Obi-Wan from EII! )

*I'm not linking because the most recent entry is about a bestiality restaurant in Japan (no, really). It's not graphic, and the blogger doesn't support it at all, but who knows whether the overworked LJ employees would have time to notice the difference if they found me linking to that?
sunnyskywalker: Young Beru Lars from Attack of the Clones; text "Sunnyskywalker" (Starbuck)
I recently discovered that Alessandro Juliani, the actor who plays Felix Gaeta on Battlestar Galactica, got his Bachelor's in Vocal/Opera Performance. Gaeta. Opera. Is this not awesome?

Since BSG is apparently going the music video route already, what with characters reciting lyrics and the whole show turning into a fanvid at the end, I think Season 4 should feature Singing Gaeta. Perhaps he could show off his lovely baritone (and his tiger tatoo) while singing in the shower.
sunnyskywalker: Young Beru Lars from Attack of the Clones; text "Sunnyskywalker" (Boomer&Gun)
I find Boomer and Athena fascinating characters, but I admit that's partly because there's so much room for speculation about them due to their lack of development. These characters have so much potential, but they have been increasingly sidelined as the series progresses - to the point where when they do show up, I suspect the writers are just making them jump through whatever hoops they need for the plot because some of their actions just plain don't make sense to me without extensive fanwanking.

What follows are some of the reasons these characters intrigue me, where I think their development is most lacking, and what else I think they could have added to the show if the writers weren't ignoring them.

Boomer: Now that I somewhat accept that I'm a Cylon, you think I'm not interesting? )

Athena: Did you just get tired of working out my motivations somewhere along the way? )
