Transcript of Christmas conversation on those tra-la-la elves

I told my uncle about the future Hobbit movie, and we came around to the problem of The Hobbit's tra-la-la elves vs. LotR's noble, serious elves. Being in the middle of a party ourselves, the conversation went about like this:

UNCLE: Well... maybe they can write it off as the difference between the high elves and the silvan elves.
ME: Drunk silvan elves?
UNCLE: Yeah, drunk silvan elves.
ME: No wonder movie!Elrond is so grumpy. He's stuck in a house full of drunk silvan elves.

I can't stand them. "Camp fairies" only starts to describe them.

"Bilbo the hobbit on a pony, my dear! Isn't it delicious?"

Really, how could they include that line without completely derailing the audience's attention for the next fifteen minutes? I think that while they may still have the elves be a little more light-hearted than in LotR, they'll tone it down a lot.

I <3 the tra-la-la elves. I think they've been sampling Gandalf's pipeweed, and they have a collective case of the giggles. And probably also the munchies. XD

A friend and I once worked out an elaborate Lord of the Drug Rings theory along those lines. There's a reason hobbits are always hungry! And so many races pass through Rivendell because Elrond is running a free, all-speaking-peoples-welcome rehab clinic.

But if Elrond is running the clinic, how come his buddies are still all "tra la la lally"? Is it really a rehab center, or just a 24-hour-a-day drug party? The Gondor Enquirer should do an expose! (Pretend there's an accent above that last e. XD)

Well, it isn't a very good rehab center :D All those people coming and going, sneaking new stuff in... And Elrond needs to relax every so often, so he might overlook, say, Gandalf bringing some pipeweed in as long as he gets some.

ETA: The other problem is Elrond's major conflict of interests - Gil-Galad left him in charge of one of the three Elven Drug Rings. Preserving all the pretty Elvish strongholds is expensive, after all. I think we decided that's why Elrond opened the rehab clinic in the first place: he felt bad about profiting off turning his people and others into tra-la-la addicts, so he figured he should at least keep them from getting too bad off.

Unless Orlando isn't available, I'm sure he will. And yes, he had to build up that alcohol tolerance somehow! I think he'll be the one who gets drunk (after having lots to drink) and leaves the dungeon keys available for lifting. Then his father will lecture him about responsibility and sentence him to running messages to Elrond's for the next century or so ;D
