The Fate of the Naberries
Jun. 12th, 2005 01:43 pmSo what happens to the Naberrie family after Revenge of the Sith?
Because of their connection to Padme, a key member of the Delegation of 2000, I think Palpatine would probably keep an eye on them. She was a popular queen, and if word got out that she had opposed Palpatine at the end, her family could serve as a rallying point for a rebellion. Things could get sticky for Palpatine if the Naboo started suspecting he'd had her killed.
He didn't, of course, but he can't prove it. Supposedly, the official story is that the Jedi killed her, but he doesn't have any proof of that to display either, does he? Palpatine usually favors misdirection and concealing evidence over outright lying; that way, there's no inconsistent facts leading back to his information and it's easier to deny he had any knowledge of whatever happened. If he starts faking evidence of Padme's death--say, doctoring footage of the Jedi Temple battle to add her or something--he leaves himself open to getting caught. Someone would figure out the evidence was faked and have a good idea who faked it, and that would be much worse than having everyone think there was something funny about the official story but having no proof. On the other hand, it also means he can't squash the speculation and rumors that always arise when there isn't any solid evidence in a mysterious death. The fact that Padme's body showed up unexpectedly pregnant is sure to have people speculating for years on what was happening behind the scenes on Coruscant.
Do the Naberries buy the story that the Jedi killed Padme? They know Padme was close to the Jedi and that she trusted them. They know that she loved a Jedi and he loved her (AOTC deleted scene), and I'll bet they have him pegged as a potential father for the mystery baby. I'm not sure how widespread the knowledge of the Delegation of 2000 was, but if the Naberries even had an inkling that Padme was less than happy with Palpatine's abuses of power, they could probably start connecting the dots. Padme didn't trust Palpatine anymore... she was close to the Jedi... Palpatine had all the Jedi killed because they supposedly rebelled... hmm! Considering that her family shares Padme's values, they were probably getting suspicious about him too. Padme stepped down when her term was up, and Palpatine "reluctantly" didn't for years after he should have. Even if they knew nothing about the petition, and even if Padme never said anything to them, they could probably guess she disapproved.
So, do the Naberries ever do anything against Palpatine, or do they just try to keep their heads down? They might, to keep Ryoo and Pooja from being targeted or left orphans if nothing else--but on the other hand, they might decide that letting the girls grow up under the Emperor's suspicion is too dangerous and they have to risk it. Maybe the family disagrees on the subject, with Jobal and Ruwee wanting to rebel and Sola wanting to just keep quiet or vice-versa. The Rebellion was led by the Senate faction, but it joined together a lot of independent resistances that grew up over the years--maybe the Naberries had something to do with one of them.
And maybe at least a few of them died because of it. Maybe Ryoo and Pooja did end up orphans. They were very young when Palpatine became Emperor, too, and even if their parents and grandparents didn't believe the story of the Jedi killing their aunt, they might have. Or maybe not. But it would be interesting if they did.
If there are still Naberries alive, I could see a really interesting setup for some EU books. It's perfectly plausible that no one would find out for decades: they probably don't even remember that the Jedi visitor's name was Skywalker, and Luke and Leia don't know their mother was a Naberrie from Naboo--but what if, somehow or other, they did find out? They might meet somehow unconnected to the discovery of their geneology. It would be interesting to see how they all got along. Would Leia remind the girls of Padme? Would they harbor a grudge against Luke for being a Jedi [ETA: like the one who got their aunt killed, I mean]? (That could be especially interesting if one or both of the girls were Force-sensitive. He would be all keen to train them, and they would be going, no, we will never join you!) How would they all react when they found out they were cousins? (And grandparents etc., if they all survived.) Luke and Leia would finally get to find out a little about their mother. That's something I've wanted to see for ages!
I hope the Naberries appear in EU books set after ROTS in some capacity. I'll just have to wait and see.
