I don't think it's because they're inherently inclined toward it, but because they can get away with it more easily, and that's some unfortunate reinforcement.
I think you're right. Also, the hegemonic group (white heterosexual males, to simplify) is in a position of power, and subconsciously fears losing it. They're in denial; they don't question their own entitlement; they have their heads in the sand when it comes to other points of view. It isn't about being reasonable or fair, it's about keeping power. Sunconscious drives like that are strong, and trump intelligence. (I'm generalizing, of course, and referring to the people who refuse to acknowledge inequities and things like white privilege.)
And yeah, they're going to continue to perform in whatever manner wins them approval; or at the very least, in whatever manner doesn't get them in trouble. Whatever seems OK for them. So in Lesboprof's xpl, Oldwhiteguy's blustering is a performance that he thinks enhances his credibility, reinforcing his position of influence. He won't change unless someone with power over him disapproves of his behavior. If he has tenure, and it sounds like he does, good luck with that! It's an excellent system for mainting the status quo.
