I assume Lewis Carroll hid his name because he was a serious grown-up academic at Oxford University and didn't want his collegues knowing he wrote children's comedy on the weekend. Or possibly he didn't want to put off publishers of Alice by waving scary titles like "An Elementary Treatise on Determinants, With Their Application to Simultaneous Linear Equations and Algebraic Equations" at them.
