Sorry I'm a little late in replying :D Yes, it's always so much more painful for me to watch friends fight. Random strangers fighting is more likely to be amusing - or worse, boring - to me, unless they have a really good reason to fight (prompted by other things in their lives, for instance) or to be in a situation where they are definitely stuck together and have to figure out how to work together. But just somehow ending up in the same room and fighting because they're different? Whatever.
Now, people who are opposites who are friends can be really interesting (and lead to lots of great conflict), but it just isn't the only model that works. That means you can mix things up and have some conflict between similar characters and some between different ones. I think it's more fun to have different flavors of conflict.
