I like the novelization's explanation, too. Is there one for why Leia was allowed to go on this mission? Because that doesn't make a lot of sense to me either. You'd think that since she was far more valuable as a politician than a fighter, they'd want to keep her out of battle unless they absolutely had to. Command crew for the shuttle? Did she actually do anything on the shuttle? I could see them letting her go if they had so few Rebels left by that point that they couldn't scrape together enough people with fighting experience, but not otherwise.
