To enlarge on this: on reading it, it was brought back to me all too vividly the intense pressure I came under from my mother-in-law (and indeed from everybody but my own mother, for whose attitude I thank God) in the early years of my marriage 40 0dd years ago to procreate asap. My own feeling from the book is that your reaction is exactly what Caleb Carr was intending.
