I was poking around on JKR's website, eventually breaking down and googling to find out how to collect all the hidden scraps, and I found something that made me really and truly smack myself in the forehead. On the "OotP Revisions" paper, JKR has the trio running into Lupin and Tonks in Hogsmeade. What were they doing there? I wish I knew. But I'll bet it hinted more strongly at Lupin/Tonks than anything we did get in OotP.
