The thing about the Caleb Carr books is that they need to be read on two levels. One is at face value. The other is to take into account the fact that they are written in the first person (from the POV of different characters) and hence the fact that one then has to take into account the possibility of unreliable narrator... from which, even in the first one, oh, SHIT!
