When I was in Santiago de Compostela a few years ago I learned that it was already an international pilgrim destination at that date.

A further point is that at that date relations between Christians and Moors were pretty good - the Cid served rulers of both faiths and had followers of both; his later fighting was against Islamic fundamentalists who were a major threat to the more liberal Muslims of Al-Andaluz.
