What is very interesting is what happened more or less throughout Europe at about this time: there were attempts by local communities to get rid of witches on a "lynch law" basis but also an insistence by the legislature and judiciary (however constituted) that there were no such things as witches and anybody killing alleged witches would be tried for murder.
